Cheshire Dance & Older Persons Day 2020

"International Older Persons Day" falls on October 1st 2020 and gives us the opportunity to highlight the important contributions that older people make to our society. However, throughout the whole 'Age Proud' month, Cheshire Dance will be celebrating and championing older adults in our community and will be launching 'Moving Moments' - an initiative to ensure that older people keep active, healthy and of course, dancing.

Moving Movements will not only encourage this age group to keep moving at home, but will bring dance, art and social interaction into lives for enhanced physical and mental wellbeing.

Moving Moments at Home

Whilst the current situation with COVID-19 has affected face-to-face movement sessions in venues, Cheshire Dance reminds the community that there's no need to stop dancing. In fact, now more than ever we must remember to keep moving, keep active and keep healthy.

With this in mind, Cheshire Dance has come together with local artist Rachel Almond to create beautifully designed pieces of art to inspire and encourage older adults in Cheshire West to stay active. Thanks to funding from Sport England and support from Cheshire West and Chester Council, Age Friendly Lache and Sanctuary Housing, 100 older residents will be receiving a set of 5 mini-artworks to display in their homes. Titled "Moving Moments at Home", these artworks are 'backed' with inspirational activities that will help guide recipients to keep on moving for greater wellbeing.

Moving Moments All The Time:

Dance wherever, whenever and with whoever

At Cheshire Dance we believe you can - and should - dance at any and all times. Why, quite simply because the benefits are just so vast. From health factors such as improving coordination, flexibility, muscle strength and a reduced risk of falls, to boosting mental and emotional wellbeing, dance has the ability to transform lives.

It's for this reason that Cheshire Dance has created some pre-recorded dance activities especially for older adults that can be accessed at all times. Below, you'll find a selection of these videos but if you would like to watch (and follow) more, head over to our YouTube Older Adults Playlist for a large selection of movement warm ups, creative dance activities and cool downs.

Please note, there are seated as well as standing versions to enable everyone to participate in dance - families, carers and friends are welcome to join in too.
