SUMMARY:Inquiring Bodies: "Liveness" with Guest Artist Jo Fong
DESCRIPTION:Inquiring Bodies is an event by dance artists\, for dance artists\, which creates a mutually supportive environment for exploration and open dialogue. We aim to create a safe and supportive space where both participant artists and Guest Artists can offer\, share and investigate together. \nFor 2026\, we welcome Jo Fong as our Guest Artist. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP\n“I like this phrase “We are consenting to explore the unknown”. My work has led me to questions like what is community? What does diversity look like? Can the body tell us something about consent? What are the positives around uncertainty or the unsolved? I’m in a constant state of learning and unlearning and yet there is a part of my practice which acknowledges my experience\, my language\, the work of relating and an inherent body intelligence that is experimenting in trusting its choices. I’m enjoying the layered\, the unknown and the effortless. \nIn terms of choreographic languages\, I draw on a wealth of influences\, from somatic and improvisation techniques\, self-generating prompts and tools or games that explore relationships with our bodies\, spaces between people\, play and working with objects. For me\, it’s about the possibility for liveness\, presence. My work is about creating the conditions so that liveness can occur.” – Jo Fong \nABOUT JO FONG\nJo Fong is an award-winning director\, choreographer and performer working in Dance\, Theatre\, Film and Live Art. She lives in Wales and her creative work reflects the need in these times for people to come together. How Shall We Begin Again? was presented at Wales Millenium Centre 2023 and Siobhan Davies Studios London 2022\, Ways of Being Together at Chapter Arts Centre 2019 and Shoreditch Town Hall 2020. A Brief History of Difference was created with DAR of Das Clarks. Sons and Mums was created with Everybody Dance in Malvern\, a beautiful collaboration with six men who have autism and their mums. \nJo is currently contributing to research with a number of projects; IcoDaCo European Collectives project\, The Choreography of Consent and The Agency of Matter – No Despair together with artist Deborah Light. She recently initiated a project called Making a Clearing inviting Wales’ freelance Global Majority dance artists to come together this winter. SUMMARY:Jack Evans film screening at Cine Window Winsford
DESCRIPTION:A unique double film screening will take place on Saturday 13 September at Cine Window\, Winsford\, bringing together dance\, digital art\, and personal storytelling.\nThe event begins at 11am\, with the first screening at 11:15am. Refreshments will be available from the nearby Crosshatch Gallery. \nThe two films are creative dance and digital explorations from a collaboration of Jack Evans\, professional dancer and choreographer and the Cine Window Team\, commissioned by Cine Window. \nThe first short film\, ‘Glitch in the Mask’’\, is a behind the scenes look at the digital process of creating a dance and digital work for live stage called Life Behind the Mask. Choreographed by Jack Evans\, Life Behind the Mask is a duet work that fuses live performance with the digital world. It explores Jack’s identity as an Autistic dancer and how he experiences the world. The piece looks at the idea of Masking – a strategy where autistic individuals suppress or conceal their natural autistic behaviours and traits to appear more neurotypical and blend into social situations. This film is an insight into the processes that Jack and digital artist Chris Oakley and programmer Mike Sharps of Cine Window Winsford went through to create the live show ‘Controlling the Mask’. \n‘Controlling the Mask’ is a digital artwork created by digital artist Chris Oakley and programmer Mike Sharps of Cine Window Winsford during their collaboration with dancer Jack Evans. Utilising bespoke software libraries tailored the demands of the evolving dance\, the piece has been created using 3D scanning to image the dancers as a ‘point cloud’\, rendering the figures in real time as matrix of points in space.’ \nJack Evans is on the Talent Development North programme at Cheshire Dance. Talent Development North (TDN) supports disabled dance artists across the North of England with a focus on those who are learning disabled or autistic (18+). Led by TIN Arts in partnership with Yorkshire Dance and Cheshire Dance\, TDN seeks to enable disabled dance artists to create exciting new work whilst gaining industry insight to build connections and explore professional pathways within the dance sector. \nThis screening is a free event but please RSVP to emma@cheshiredance.org for numbers.

SUMMARY:DCNW NW Artists Consultation Sessions
DESCRIPTION:  \nDance Consortia North West is announcing a reset moment with a series of three consultation sessions with artists and independent producers across the region. Please do join us. \nThe agenda will focus on the future of dance in the NW and will be facilitated by two new DCNW consultants\, Ian Tabbron and Helen Palmer\, thanks to the support of Arts Council England funding. Together we can instigate a real push for change\, to create more and better opportunities for dance across the entire region. \n  \nIan and Helen bring a wealth of experience and will be working with us into the new year through 3 phases: \n\nConsultation – So we really understand current and future needs in a fast changing and what can feel like an ever-tougher working environment.\nPlanning – Not just a document\, but working groups that will re-imagine new\, much needed programmes for dance development.\nResourcing – And yes\, we have a fundraiser too\, who will help make those crucial asks for longer term investment in the projects we design together.\n\nThe broad aims that we can use to help guide our thinking and action will centre around ‘new work\, new practice\, diversity and place.’  No doubt our climate emergency will and should feature too. All conversations during the sessions will be held in confidence. \n  \nThe three sessions will take place on: \nWednesday 17th July 2pm – 4.30pm – Lancaster (The Storey) \nMonday 22nd July 10am – 12.30pm – Liverpool (Unity Theatre) \nTuesday 30th July 10am – 12.30pm – Manchester (Contact Theatre) \n  \nYou can book your FREE place at any of these consultations here. \n  \nWhilst encouraging in-person\, we will open up an opportunity to join online. \nWe are keen to hear from diverse voices\, but we recognise that it can be especially difficult for freelance artists and practitioners to attend consultation sessions in person due to a variety of reasons such as financial\, childcare\, access requirements etc. We have a small number of bursaries available to support travel and per diem expenses. If you are interested in applying for a bursary\, please click here. \nThere will be other gatherings planned too in the coming months\, not just about the future of North West dance but also practice sharings and events coming out of the final phase of DCNW’s Research Programme. \nPlease confirm which date you can join us by booking a FREE ticket here: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/cheshire-dance/e-xlgbke. \nLet’s work together and push again for change. \n  \n\n  \nBursaries: \nAt Cheshire Dance\, we believe that access\, equity and diversity are important for Dance Consortia North West\, our programme and the wider dance sector. We have a limited number of bursaries available for each workshop for £40 each to cover travel expenses and basic per diem costs. \nWe therefore may not be able to accommodate all requests due to budget limitations. \nIf you are not successful in securing a bursary and are therefore unable to attend one of the workshops\, we will arrange for you to speak to Ian or Helen directly on a one to one basis. \n  \nTo apply for a bursary\, please complete this short form here: https://forms.gle/gJ1PFxnbUnWm7qiK9 \n  \nFor questions or queries or to tell us about any access requirements\, please contact: dcnw@cheshiredance.org.  \n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n
