This is a combined dance development and delivery role. The Emerging Dance Development Artist will be part of the Cheshire Dance core team. One day of the post will be specifically dedicated to supporting the Dance Development Artist for Cheshire West and Chester. There will also be cross-county initiatives and regional projects that the postholder will be involved in. There will be opportunity for the post holder to identify their own key areas of interest and practice within which they develop their skills.

Main Tasks

  • - To support the Cheshire Dance artistic team in the delivery of the artistic programme (through both practical delivery and logistical/administrative support) including county wide and regional projects
  • - To support the Dance Development Artist for Cheshire West in the development and delivery of the ongoing programme in the borough 
  • - To support the Business and Marketing Manager in sharing Cheshire Dance's work with local, national and international communities
  • - To actively contribute to the ongoing development of Cheshire Dance’s Artistic Programme and Vision
  • - To use own initiative to identity opportunities to develop dance within Cheshire
  • - To shadow Cheshire Dance artists in a variety of delivery contexts - building skills to take on the development and facilitation of dance sessions in a variety of settings including community, education and professional contexts
  • - To commit to developing their own artistic practice and dance development skills
  • - To play a full and active role in the Cheshire Dance team including attending regular team meetings

Special Conditions

The Emerging Dance Development Artist post may require a significant amount of evening and weekend work. Respecting the flexibility that this will require of the postholder, Cheshire Dance will equally enable the Artist to work flexibly, operating an hour-for-hour Time Off In Lieu system.

The Emerging Dance Development Artist will need ready access to transport, and be prepared to travel around the County and North West, and periodically to travel outside the region.

Person Specification
The following skills, experience and competencies are required/desirable:

Experiences, Skills & Interests



Dance education (degree in dance or equivalent experience/ training) - at least three years

Knowledge of and skills in a variety of dance styles or approaches

Experience of shadowing (supporting) dance sessions

Some experience of delivering dance sessions (in a variety of settings)

Awareness of community dance sector including Dance and Health

Some experience of Dance and Health projects/contexts

Desire to expand facilitation/teaching knowledge and skills


Excellent time management and organisational skills


Desire to build project management and dance development skills

Some experience of running or managing sessions or projects

An interest in community dance practice, Dance and Older People, Dance and Disability, Children and Young People’s Dance, Artist Development, developing audiences and developing partnerships with others both for your own career development but also as part of a NW community of artists/practitioners


Willingness to be part of and contribute to the Cheshire’s Artist Lead for Artists (ALFA) Group, chaired by Jan Halloran and via that the NW-wide ALFA group, convened by Bridget Fiske and Mary Prestidge
